Radical Gays Affirm: Church Has No Role in This American Life

Somewhere there's a tolerant middle. Until then the Intolerant "Tolerance" Crowd Radicals hold the largest megaphone in Oregon's continuing shouting match over same sex marriage. Their voice drowned out moderation in this latest battle in the culture wars when they sent emails to OPB (government radio) complaining of the station's choice to host a presentation by popular host of 'This American Life', Ira Glass, at a 1500 seat venue--which just happened to be a church.

New Hope Church, whose large edifice sits regally off I 205, is also home to Pastor Ray Cotton who supported the 2004 initiative calling for marriage to be between a man and a woman. Scandal!
Voters in Oregon overwhelmingly voted to add language to Oregon's constitution holding that marriage was between a man and a woman. It passed with 57% of the vote. The good Pastor was, uh, preaching to the choir.

OPB received two emails of complaint about Glass's appearance in the church. Then, as the Zero story points out here, OPB'ers started checking out blogs where commenters were outraged about it. They were outraged that Glass would hold his talk in New Hope's large worship center where Cotton preached on traditional values. Scandal! One blogger started stirring up opposition to the venue and voila! No more church in 'This American Life.'

Apparently OPB'ers didn't bother to check out the Christian blog sites to determine reaction to the show in the church. Christians apparently don't count to the OPB'ers. For the record, there was no Christian opposition to Glass's appearance.

The radical gays now have scuttled the appearance of a talented performer at the church AND threaten to 'out' names of people who sign a petition to revisit the gay marriage issue (see previous posts here and here), which the legislature overturned in the last session in obvious contradiction to the will of the voters.

Even if you're a gay activist, you have to acknowledge the intolerance of your friends, the tolerance of the church to host this show, the scandalous undermining of the initiative process, and the cowardly fear shown by OPB that gays would be upset with them.

So do we live in a society where fear of how others will react toward us dictates what we will admit to being in favor of?

I remember once signing a petition based on my belief that the people had a right to get the measure put up for a vote; and then later voted against the measure.

  3. Something you lefties just can't fathom, cn, is that just because we see no reason to allow gay marriage doesn't mean we hate gays.

Given the outrage and calls for resignation and prosecution we hear from the left whenever a Republican becomes known, or suspected, as a gay, we can all see just who is really in the closet when it comes to hating gays.

The tactic of intimidation coming out of this group threatening to "expose" any who oppose their agenda is just as hateful.

If they wish to change my mind about gay marriage, all they need do is show where the change will benefit society as a whole, not just one small group.

In the meantime, whatever happened with the push for civil unions? Why are they no longer acceptable, if the reason for it all is so they can be recognized legally?

If this group wants to publish my name as opposed to their agenda, I only hope they print mine at the top of the list and in bold letters! I don't intimidate all that easy.

  5. It’s interesting that when I was in college (some 30 + years ago) my abnormal psychology and sociology classes outlined decades of research showing the sociological causes of homosexual behavior as a deviant abnormal social behavior. Now you have a very difficult time finding this previously well documented and researched view of homosexuality. This was just before the gay movement took on the Marxist ideology of the women’s movement in the 70’s (oppressed by men and government blah, blah, blah – oppressed by heterosexuals and government blah, blah, blah…). Then the gay movement came up with very poor research trying to justify their behavior by showing homosexuality is caused by “genetics”. Very poor and statistically invalid research by any real standards (I’ve read a lot of it). With most people still seeing homosexuality as not the norm (and to many it’s deviant), the gay movement became very politically organized to socially and legally “norm” their behavior. It’s interesting that the gay movement has a number of factions – for example the older camp who for many don’t care about “gay rights” and just want to go about their homosexual lives in private. And the younger gay faction who have become very politically active trying to “norm” their behavior with significant legal activism, PR, and politicking. But what I think it’s really been all about over the past 30 years or so is that many liberals are mostly just old fashion selfish, hedonists, and/or narcissist (I just may re-read The Culture of Narcissism by Lasch). Their moral compass is basically this - whatever self gratifying whim they may have; well, they should have the right to have it, and the pleasure of it without any social stigma (or especially without any outdated notions of faith tradition guilt). And if your moral compass objects (i.e. a faith tradition), then God help you for objecting to their selfish, hedonistic, narcissist, or what ever you will, pleasure gratification. If you try to object and cause the guilt thing then you’re a "bigot" and "intolerant", and we need to out law anything that will cause a social stigma or guilt (for heavens sake). Pursuing life, liberty, and happiness doesn't mean legalizing ones whimsical hedonism and/or narcissism. At one time homosexuality may have been tolerated if left a private matter. But the gay movement has now come to the point of some very serious legal, moral, political, and social consequences… especially to those who will be labeled “bigot” or “intolerant” because they will never accept homosexual behavior as “normal”.

  9. Klatu,
Gays apparently aren't in favor of privacy considering their activists publish books on how to conduct themselves while 'cruising' for gay sex in bathrooms and publish websites devoted to divulging the best places to find anonymous sex.

  10. There is a very dedicated group of left-wing gay activists out there who have made it their goal to drag gay Republicans' sex lives out into the public eye unless they toe the line politically.
This tactic of invading people's private lives and exposing them to the public is nothing short of blackmaillllllllllllllllllll.

    I read this at www.newsbusters.org

I thought it was right onnnnnnnnnnn

  11. How about this Tobin guy take in as his boarder (or live-in companion) the self-admitted pedophile that just moved to Portland from California. Then everyone would know where they both are. Maybe they could "out" each other.
