| Portland Mayor Sam Adams is one of the more conservatively dressed at "Pride" Parade |
The annual drag show known as the "Gay Pride" Parade has come and gone. Once again we inveigh against the the date of the parade--Father's Day--and beg the "proud" homosexual community to change it. It's never been seriously considered to my knowledge.
The "Gay Pride" parade consists mostly of drag queens trying to look like Ru Paul, leather festooned men and butch chicks. It's a freak show for the "flamboyant" crowd.
I feel sorry for button down gay folks for whom this parade is a civic embarrassment. They're not proud, they're chagrined.
I feel sorry for families as well. In my last testimony to the Portland City Council I noted that Portland almost goes out of its way to offend families. This is just another example of the City giving its imprimatur on an event that openly thumbs its nose at families.

Hi Victoria,
ReplyDeletePortland is a city where only one in four households have children. For the most part, the city's gaze is focused on bigger issues like "food deserts" and the threat of "climate refugees" while improving the quality of life for the hipster class. Children and the real issues of their education and their opportunites for the future is only paid lip service. Not being parents only makes them less sensitive or tone deaf to those issues like the naked bike ride and this activity.
I remember years back when KPAM first came on the air, Pete Schulberg checked up on a national group naming Portland the most "kid friendly" in the nation which was touted at Portland City Council by Dam Saltzman as recognition of the city's committment to children. Schulberg spoke to a person from that organization who admittted on the air that no one had ever visited Portland and they had only consulted various internet web sites to make their decision.
Yet another skirmish in Portland's war on reality. The perception that you care and are doing something trumps the reality of what is happeneing around them.
and yet with the "ever diminishing" number of children, as I put it at last week's council meeting, the city mother and fathers continue to try to get rid of those left behind.
